The collection consists primarily of research materials compiled by Gregory Grossman about the Jewish communities living in the "Far East," including communities in the Chinese cities of Shanghai and Harbin and the Russian community in Manchuria. Included in the collection are the following: a Russian-language marriage certificate for Grigoriy Grossman and Klara Davydovna; a photocopy of an immigration visa for Elias Grossman; a biography of Dr. Moses Grossman; a narrative about the Zikman-Grossman family in Harbin; oral histories of Elias and Mara Grossman; memoirs of Robert Lury and his wife, Selma Seidelman; an obituary of Alexander Maisin, another emigrant from Harbin, Manchuria; a brief memoir by Faye Sand Zadeh and her father, Henry; a program for a memorial service for Boris Bressler, another former member of the Harbin Jewish community; information on the creation of the Old China Hands Archive at the California State University, at Northridge; a copy of "Passage Through China: the Jewish Communities of Harbin, Tientsin and Shanghai," a publication of the Jewish Museum of the Diaspora in Israel about the Jews of China; a photocopy of the book "Russian Art in Manchuria" that was published by the Harbin Symphony Society (1942); and a photocopy of a list of names of those buried in the Harbin Jewish Cemetery.

Gregory Grossman was born in the Ukraine, in 1921. In 1923, Gregory and his parents, Miron Grossman and Raisa Zikman, moved to Harbin, China with his father's sister, Polina. Once there, Polina married Raisa's brother, Lew Zikman, who had arrived in Harbin in 1916. Later, Grigoriy Grossman, who was another brother of Miron and Polina, moved to Harbin as well. Grigoriy Grossman, who was married to Klara Davydovna, had two children: Moses, who was born in Kiev before they came to Harbin, and Elias (Lou). Moses Grossman left Harbin in 1941 to go to college, and he eventually became a pediatric doctor at the University of California, at San Francisco. Elias married a woman named Mara, left Harbin in 1955, and settled in Australia for a while before immigrating to the United States in 1966. Gregory Grossman left Harbin and went to the University of California, at Berkeley (1938), and eventually became a professor of economics there.
